Every child deserves to feel safe, included and confident at school.
For families living with cystic fibrosis, that doesn’t happen without support.
With your help, more children like Koah and Darcy can walk into the classroom ready to learn, belong and thrive.
Give today and help make school safe
Meet Koah
Koah is full of life: always moving, always smiling, with an energy that lights up every room. You wouldn’t know he lives with cystic fibrosis just by watching him.
But behind the scenes, CF shapes every part of his daily life.
When Koah started kindy, his mum Brittney found herself overwhelmed with questions she’d never had to ask before.
“How do I explain CF to teachers? Will they take it seriously if he looks healthy? How will his medications be managed during the day?”
Each morning already involved physiotherapy, treatments and medications before the school bell even rang. Adding school coordination felt like one more impossible task.
Like many parents, Brittney worried constantly about infection risks, whether staff would understand CF, and whether Koah would truly be safe.
That changed when Cystic Fibrosis WA stepped in.
Through the CFWA School Program, Koah’s teachers were educated, risks were identified, and a personalised CF Student Action Plan was created.
"For the first time, I felt confident that Koah would be safe, understood and supported at school."
- Brittney, Koah's mum
Meet Darcy
Darcy is determined, strong-willed and full of kindness. She’s a happy, active student who loves learning and being with her friends.
But like many children with cystic fibrosis, her journey to school wasn’t simple.
For her mum Susan, starting school brought a different kind of worry. As a Learning Support Coordinator herself, she knew just how busy classrooms can be, and wondered how Darcy’s needs would be managed.
Living in regional WA added another layer of complexity.
With support from CFWA, everything began to shift.
An early online meeting brought together Darcy’s family, her teacher, school leaders and the school nurse, creating a shared understanding from the very beginning.
Each year, CFWA works with Darcy’s school to update her Student Action Plan - ensuring everyone involved in her care understands her needs.
Today, Darcy is thriving.
But that didn’t happen by chance. It happened because her school, her family and CFWA worked together to make it possible.
"Her class read My ABCF at School. It helped Darcy answer the natural questions from curious classmates and normalised small differences in her routine, such as taking enzymes with food."
- Susan, Darcy's mum
